Christmas in School!

1st December 2022

Christmas at Thirsk Community Primary School

It’s that time of year again when the tree is standing proud and twinkly in the school hall, Christmas songs are playing and there is a steady flow of glitter in the classrooms!!

Christmas is always such a busy and exciting time within school. This term we were able to hold our Christmas Fayre again which was open to the whole community. We had Santa and his Elf in the grotto with real life reindeers. Thanks to all the local businesses that held a stall, including Fred and Burts, crafty Fox, Fern and Firefly, North Yorkshire Reindeer, Happy Hampers, Sweet pops 62 and Crafts by Ellie. Not to mention all the various donations from local businesses that were so gratefully received; without you we would not be able to do this!!

We have had not 1 but 2 Nativity’s. The youngest children in school within our Nursery and reception classes put on such a lovely show including songs sung with all their gusto. For most this was their first ever show! Then over to Sutton and Roseberry, our KS1 classes who were not to be outdone and also gave shining performances singing some more fabulous songs and wearing some dazzling costumes…... There was even a Christmas Pig in there!!

There has been Art and crafts galore in all the classes this week as not only have we been doing Christmas crafts but have also had Art enrichment week. We had a visit from some amazing young art students from the high school who came to talk to our children and show off some of their stunning artwork. We were extremely lucky to have some of the amazing Thirsk yarnbombers come in and give a lesson in pom pom making and other crafts. The children have loved it all!

A highlight of this last week at school had to be the Santa/Turkey dash!! This is the first time we have held this event and what a success it was!! Our fabulous headteacher Mr Chandler and fellow teacher and Chairwoman of the PTA Miss Wood, donned a pair of blow up Santa and turkey costumes and each class were given the chance to put on their Christmas jumpers one more time and run with them around the school field!!! They all tried their best to catch the turkey and Santa but who knew turkeys could run so fast!!! We raised £148.03 that we have donated to local food banks and warm spaces!!

Finally we end this final week at school with our annual Christmas carol service at St Mary’s Church. We have not been able to do this usual School tradition since 2019, so it has been wonderful to finally be able to take the children once again.

The whole school were involved in singing a selection of Christmas carols and The Christmas Story was beautifully retold by some of our pupils who very proudly represented our school and stood at the front of the church to read.

It has been a busy term but we wouldn’t have it any other way! We hope that all the children, parents, families and friends have a wonderful Christmas and new year!!
